Surprise! The Confederate Raids on Randolph County, W. Va., 1864 - 1865
William R. Terrill, a graduate of West Point in 1853, remained loyal to the Union, and rose to the rank of Brigadier General. He was killed at Perryville, Ky., October 8, 1862.
James B. Terrill, a graduate of the Virginia Military Institute, served as Colonel of the 13th Virginia Infantry. He was killed at Bethesda Church, Va., May 30, 1864. He was appointed Brigadier General the following day.
Philip M. Terrill served in the 25th Virginia Infantry and the 12th Virginia Cavalry. He was killed near Winchester, Va., November 12, 1864.
George P. Terrill, also a graduate of the Virginia Military Institute, served as commander of the local militia and home guards in Roanoke County, Va. He survived the war.
Included in this biography is Emily Cornelia Clay Terrill and her husband, George A. Porterfield. Porterfield, an 1844 graduate of the Virginia Military Institute and Mexican War Veteran, commanded the troops at Philippi, Va., and was surprised by Union troops on June 3, 1861.
The manuscript is in the hands of a McFarland & Company, Publishers, in Jefferson, NC. The projected release date is the spring/summer of 2010.
